Food Aggression Training for Dogs

Many owners live in fear of their dogs, especially if they have food aggression. This is a problem. Rather than training their dogs and setting boundaries, they’ve allowed their dog to set the boundaries. I’ve met owners whose dogs were showing signs of dog’s food aggression, sibling aggression, or resource guarding and the excuses of temperament, instincts, or the dog retaining ownership over a space or object were common, such as a food bowl or the dog’s bowl.

The truth is, it’s not instinct or temperament, and a dog can’t own anything. The tendency for a dog to show aggressive behavior such as growl, snap, or bare teeth if his/her owner tries to touch something they see as theirs is a simple issue of behavior. This is especially common where food is concerned, and this is known as food aggression.

If you’ve ever tried to pet your dog while he/she is eating, been snapped at while trying to remove his/her dish for any reason, or if you have two dogs that bicker or fight over food, you’ve got a case of food aggression on your hands. It can be fixed, with proper training.

Don’t let food aggression affect when your dog eats. Starting working with them when they are young to avoid any aggressive behavior.

Food Aggression in Dogs CAN be Fixed

My in-home training program is designed to address problems like dog’s food aggression, resource guarding, aggressive behavior and dog aggression, problems that take place within the home and would therefore be trained most effectively within the home. In-home training also allows me to fully focus on you and your dog and customize the training plan to fit your dog.

For an issue like food aggression, basic obedience training would definitely be employed, as would proper leash handling techniques, hand feeding, and more. We would work to establish your leadership within your own home as well as your dog’s respect for that leadership. Essentially, he or she will come to view you as leader of the pack, and they simply won’t argue with the leader of the pack.

How to Handle a Food Aggressive Dog

Having a dog with food aggression can be challenging. No matter what the dog eats, so if you have a dog with food aggression you cannot just avoid the behavior. Food guarding can happen to any dog, they might guard a food dish, the dogs bowl, a food bowl or even a bone.

Some dogs even have mild food aggression where they only do food guarding of high value items such as wet food or treats.

When we work with dog owners, we have them work on many aspects of the dog’s behavior to address the food aggression. We always try hand feeding when we are dealing with food aggression in dogs.
